SIX days before elections, the leaders of the four strongest parties met in a television debate. The participants presented no new statements. The leaders of Christian Democrats (KDH) and the Movement for Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) again stressed that they consider cooperation after the elections unacceptable.
“We refuse to cooperate with the HZDS while Vladimír Mečiar is at its head. For Slovakia, it would be a punishment if you were a part of the government, “ Pavol Hrušovský said to Mečiar. Mečiar retorted and said that the HZDS would not go in the government with KDH if it were lead by Hrušovský. The daily Pravda wrote.
Hrušovský called on Mečiar to apologize for his style of ruling until 1998, which lead Slovakia into international isolation. Smer’s leader Robert Fico said that he considered a government formed of two parties as most acceptable.
