The founder and first chairman of the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) Ján Čarnogurský officially launched his bid for the post of Slovak president on Monday, December 10, as his petition committee began collecting the signatures necessary for his candidacy symbolically in front of the President's Office in Bratislava.
If Čarnogurský – Slovak prime minister in 1991-92 of then Czechoslovakia – manages to collect at least 15,000 signatures, he will be running in the 2014 presidential election. "I've decided to go for civic candidacy because it allows me to meet goals better than a partisanship candidacy,” he said as quoted by the TASR newswire. “I'd like to make use of my political and legal experience that I've gathered over the past decades for the good of this country," said Čarnogurský, 68, who says he is "hopeful" about his chances.
