Despite the fact the European Commission has decided to publish its annual Regular Report on Slovakia a week earlier than planned, on October 9 rather than 16, diplomats said it would not hurt the country’s EU entry chances.
With elections on September 20-21, and the European Union anxious about the possible return to power of autocratic former PM Vladimír Mečiar, the EC had been urging Slovakia to form a government as quickly as possible before the report’s publication.
The new government should still be set up quickly, diplomats added, in order that the EU has a clear idea of the country’s political direction before entry invitations are issued at a December EU expansion summit in Copenhagen.
