Zuzana Čaputová, who will run for president in next year’s election, has won the support of the personalities that steered communism to its end during the Velvet Revolution in November of 1989, the TASR newswire reported.
“We’ve gotten used to a president we can rely on when it comes to ethics and modern development,” said sculptor Peter Tatár, as quoted by TASR, adding that Čaputová can be such a president.
In addition, Czech Michael Kocáb, Anton Popovič and Mikuláš Huba have embraced Čaputová at the November 14 press conference in Bratislava, TASR reported.
She was only 16 when communism fell
When these men fought for change in squares three decades ago, Čaputová was just a sixteen-year-old teenager.
“I was too young to help you but sensitive enough to understand what was at stake,” she said, as quoted by TASR. “I’m one of those who could enroll in university and graduate.”
Thanks to these men, Čaputová could also express her opinions, explore the world, and live freely without being persecuted for her views, she told the journalists. Therefore, she underlined it is necessary to fight for decency, humanity, and justice, TASR reported.
“Again, we’re going back to intimidation and bullying of young people, who pointed to the evil, and their pure convictions,” Čaputová said, as quoted by TASR, hoping to continue these men’s work as the president.
She wants to build up the country the changemakers from 1989 dreamed of in the past.
