Former economy and environment minister Peter Žiga has been elected the deputy speaker of parliament.
The Hlas member is being prosecuted in a corruption case. His charge depends on one witness, former judge and Smer’s former deputy justice minister Monika Jankovská, the Sme daily writes. She herself faces corruption charges.
Whether she insists on her testimony from 2020 is not clear, nor when was the last time the police questioned her.
Corruption charges were brought against Žiga in December 2020. According to Jankovská, Žiga tried to bribe Supreme Court Justice Katarína Pramuková with €100,000 for her help. Žiga allegedly wanted the judge to decide on the Gabčíkovo hydropower plant case in favour of Slovakia, and against then-majority Italian owner Enel. Žiga wanted the state to take over the plant.
