THE INHABITANTS of Bratislava thanked God for saving their city from fatalities during the August floods in the capital.

Churchgoers thanked the Lord at a mass held September 26 and led by Bratislava regional bishop Ján Sokol along with 30 other priests from the city.

"The floods were not God's punishment, but rather man punishing himself through his unreasonable mutiny against God's commandments, which he received for his own good," Sokol said.

Damages from summer flooding in Slovakia have been calculated at Sk1.7 billion ($40 million), a fraction of the destruction caused in Germany and the Czech Republic.
