THE FOURTH year of the biggest Czecho-Slovak music festival, Cibulafest, which takes place in Holíč near the border between the two republics, attracted 8,000 people this year on the weekend of July 20-21, the highest turnout in the festival’s history.
Musical offerings ran the gamut of rock, pop, alternative, and hip-hop, while other events involved extreme sports, motorcycles, woodcutting, Chinese luck lanterns, and last but not least, dishes involving cibuľa (Slovak for onion), the festival’s namesake. Bands including Olympic, No Name, Arakain, Desmod, Divokej Bill, Dalibor Janda, Verona, AMO, Karpina and others, played during the two day festival. Legendary Czech band Olympic’s performance had to be halted 10 minutes into the set, as the torrential rain caused a blackout. But after a short break, the band continued playing.
The festival’s organisers brought added value to this year’s event by collaborating with the Foundation of Children’s Cardio-surgery Centre to encourage visitors to donate money to the Centre for equipment and toys for ill children. Dodo Mikláš from the Access Promotion agency told the TASR newswire that the money they collected was presented on stage to Mária Kováčová, the foundation’s administrator.
“Cibulafest keeps growing each year, and we want to make next year’s even better,” organiser Vladimír Chrenka said. “We set the bar high and the number of visitors [this year] is proof,” he added.
