Former Košice city councillor František Olejník was sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of corruption by the Supreme Court on April 25.
The Supreme Court turned down his appeal against the verdict of the Specialised Criminal Court in Pezinok from July 2012. The court also rejected appeals by Jozef Maškal and Marián Mraško, who were both sentenced to probation, the TASR newswire wrote. According to the Supreme Court, Maškal promised Olejník through Mraško, who acted as a mediator, a bribe of more than €11,000 to ensure that Košice would sell him a building in the city's Main Street that he had been renting. In 2008, the City Council approved the sale of the property for €182,000, despite the fact that the real value was almost €400,000.
The sentences are sterner than those originally handed down following his initial conviction in 2010, when Olejník was given a three-year suspended sentence, a three-year ban on meeting with his accuser, a five-year ban on holding public office in Kosice and a fine of €5,000.
