Clothing and textile companies in Slovakia have laid off 13,000 people over the last five years, the Pravda daily reported on September 13.
Experts said higher wages and a stronger crown have turned Slovakia into a country where it is not worth sewing large-scale orders.
The downfall of the industry is most visible in Trenčín. It used to be called the city of fashion. But the biggest clothing maker, Ozeta, shut down its plant this year, and the city’s vocational school did not open its clothing study programme this year.
