EARLY elections in Slovakia could be held in March or April of next year. While the ruling Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK), the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) and the opposition parties consider this time frame acceptable, Slovakia’s Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda is against early elections, the daily Pravda wrote.
According to the PM, there is a chance to find a majority of MP support in parliament. Dzurinda attacked Robert Fico, leader of the opposition party Smer, saying that the Communists in parliament headed by Fico were responsible for the opposition’s refusal to open the parliament’s session after the summer recess.
In response to the Dzurinda’s statements, Fico said that if the prime minister cannot garner sufficient support in parliament, he should resign.
Fico thinks that agreeing on the date of early elections will be difficult because “ending the [term] will be hard for some [MPs]”.
