ORGANISERS of an event in Zvolen called Forestry Days collected 1,280 handprints for an initiative called Ruky pre les (Hands for Forests), the TASR newswire wrote. The coloured prints of people’s hands were collected at Zvolen's Main Square over six hours on April 14. It was the first attempt at a Slovak record of this type, said Igor Svitok from Slovenské Rekordy, which keeps track of such efforts in Slovakia.
“The central idea of the initiative was to express support for the message of the 2011 International Year of Forests and each handprint expressed agreement with the message [of protecting forests],” Svitok said. “Among the 1,280 handprints was one by Slovakia's pop idol, Peter Cmorík, who even autographed it.”
As in many other efforts of this type, the number of handprints is expected to rise as others seek to beat the record. The National Forestry Centre in Zvolen organised the April event.
