Austrian Embassy Lecture, Classical Concert and Exhibitions

'All Dreams Lead To Vienna' is the title of a classical concert, part of the series of concerts 'List of Muses', organised by the Austrian Embassy and Bratislava Culture Centre. Austrian opera singer Topsy Küppers together with the Slovak-Austrian quartet GOB Swingers will perform compositions by Strauss, Lehár and Offenbach. The concert will start at 19:00 on Sunday, January 21 at Astorka Theatre on Suché Mýto 17. Tickets will be sold at Bratislava Culture Centre on Uršulínska 11, Mon-Fri 14:00-18:00. Tel: 5441 6548.
The Austrian Culture Centre together with Docomomo Slovakia (Documentation and Conservation of the Modern Movement) is holding an exhibition of the architect Christian Ludwig. Born in Slovakia in 1901, Ludwig created the best of his works in Bratislava (i.e. Café Regina), before he moved to Germany in 1944. His architecture is documented by photographs, plan designs and models, and will be exhibited in the Austrian Culture Center on Zelená 7. The exhibition will run till the end of January 2001.
The institution is also holding an exhibition of the works of Ludwig's son Christian Ludwig Attersee. Also born in Slovakia, Attersee is considered to be one of the founders of the "New Paintings" style in central Europe and is the most successful contemporary Austrian painter. The exhibition will take place in Slovenská národná galéria (Slovak National Gallery) on Riečna 1 and will end on February 28, 2001. Tel: 5443 2985.
French Institute Exhibition
An exhibition of the artist Ester Šimerová-Martinčeková entitled 'Cameos on Saint-John Persea's Poems', organised by the French Institute, features cut semiprecious stones withcarved reliefs on a background visualising Persea's poems. Šimerová-Martinčeková, the sculptor and painter influenced by cubism and surrealism styles, was born in Bratislava in 1909. Bahá'í Community Concert
The Bahá'í Community in Bratislava invites you to a Chamber Quartet Concert in honour of the 10th anniversary of the foundation of the Bratislava Bahá'í Counsel. Goethe Institute Exhibition
The German Culture Institute holds a photo exhibition of André Gelpke entitled 'Homesickness', displaying a series of photographs Gelpke took between 1983 and 1986 in his hometown of that time, Düsseldorf, and neighbouring countries capturing people during carnivals, peace demonstrations, in museums and at balls. Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting
An "Alcoholics Anonymous" group for English-speakers meets every Wednesday at 18:30 in Petržalka on Kopčianska 14, 2nd floor. The building is located across from the Petržalka train station and has a Matador sign. For more information call Frank at 4342 1637.
Bratislava Zen Centre
Every Tuesday and Thursday from 18:30 to 20:00, the Slovak Zen Buddhism school Kuan Um in Bratislava invites beginners as well as long-term students to practice and learn about Zen Buddhism. Those interested can attend the meetings at Ľudovíta Fullu 58/22. To get there, take bus #32 from the Main Train Station till the end of the line, get off and walk down Beniakova street to Ľudovíta Fullu street. Or take trams 1, 5, 9, or 12 from the centre in the direction of Karlova Ves, get off at the Nad Lúčkami bus stop and go up the hill to Ľudovíta Fullu street.
