Parliament approved a bill to pay compensation to former political prisoners of the communist regime through 2004, giving each a basic amount of about $2,000 for each year served in jail.
In the vote on the bill, all 11 members of parliament for the Communist Party abstained. The party entered the legislature in last September’s elections for the first time in the history of independent Slovakia.
