The Košice regional office of the Slovak Democratic Christian Union (SDKÚ) filed a complaint with the Constitutional Court on November 25 alleging that election fraud took place during the elections to the regional governments in the Košice II election district on November 14, the TASR newswire reported.
According to the SDKÚ regional chairman for Košice, Viliam Novotný, Slovakia has not seen such election fraud since 1989. “Ballots were taken out (from polling stations) in plastic bags before the end of the elections on the basis of instruction by Kosice-West borough (authorities),” said Novotný to TASR, adding that the ballots may have been used to benefit Smer candidates for regional parliament and its governor, Zdenek Trebuľa, who was declared re-elected.
SDKÚ is also calling on the mayor of Košice-West borough - the election district where the incidents were reported - to resign from his post immediately and give up his political career.
“I don't know how many votes Trebuľa actually got in this election district, but the result of the election for the governor wouldn't change if we asked to have the election for governor repeated. This motion wouldn’t pass at the Constitutional Court, so we aren’t submitting it,” added Novotný.
SDKÚ is only asking the Constitutional Court to declare the first round of the regional elections for members of parliament in the Košice II election district to be invalid and for a new election to be organised. TASR
