Two soldiers injured by an Afghani terrorist in Kandahar in the beginning of July has improved and is stabilised, Defence Ministry spokeswoman Martina Balleková told the TASR newswire on July 26.
“The soldier with a gunshot wound in the chest underwent a series of surgical operations in the past week,” Balleková said, as quoted by TASR, adding that both injured troopers are still at a U.S. field hospital in Landstuhl, Germany.
A member of the Afghan National Army opened fire with a machine gun from a guard tower at the Kandahar airbase on July 9, killing Sergeant-Major Daniel Kavuliak, and injuring another six men. Kavuliak was the first member of the Slovak army to be killed in Afghanistan.
The four soldiers with light injuries were offered transport back to Slovakia but refused.
The two seriously wounded soldiers were transported to the U.S. airbase at Ramstein in Germany and immediately transferred to a U.S. military hospital in Landstuhl July 9.
Meanwhile, a commission appointed by the General Staff of the Slovak Armed Forces investigating the Afghanistan incident has preliminarily concluded that the Slovak army unit could not have prevented the shooting, and that they did not violate any security rules.
