The Slovak Confederation of Political Prisoners is set to commemorate the victims of the Warsaw Pact intervention in Czechoslovakia on August 21, 1968 at a memorial plaque on the building of Comenius University's Faculty of Law in Bratislava on Tuesday, member of the confederation Peter Sandtner told the TASR newswire. [On August 21, 1968, the Soviet and Warsaw Pact armies entered then-Czechoslovakia to suppress the local ‘revolt’ against Soviet dominance and the attempt to introduce a series of reforms referred to as ‘Communism with human face’. At the Law Faculty, a student was shot down by a Soviet tank, ed. note.]
The programme was planned to begin with the laying of wreaths at 9:30, to be followed by a speech by confederation chairman Anton Srholec. "Parliamentary vice-chairs Erika Jurinová (Ordinary People and Independent Personalities-OĽaNO) and Ján Figeľ (Christian-Democratic Movement-KDH) have confirmed that they will attend," said Sandtner for TASR. Another event, a large meeting of political prisoners from Slovakia and the Czech Republic, is set to take place in Leopoldov (Trnava region) on Saturday, announced Sandtner.
