THE CONSTITUTIONAL and judicial committee of parliament did not adopt a proposal to amend Slovakia’s Constitution in accord with the draft bill on the origin of property as proposed by Prime Minister Robert Fico.
Following the vote, Fico said that the decision of MP Lucia Žitňanská from the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) to abstain from voting was in stark contrast to SDKÚ's statements regarding the matter and exposes the true nature of the party.
By abstaining, Žitňanská declined to back a constitutional amendment that is a precondition for the approval of Fico's proposed law on proving the origin of property, the TASR newswire reported.
“Lucia Žitňanská … has shown today that proving the origin of property is only a marketing scheme for SDKÚ,” Fico wrote in his statement released on February 23.
Žitňanská reacted by saying that Fico’s claims are nonsense.
“Robert Fico may not remember, but SDKÚ backed such an act both in this and the previous election term,” she said, as quoted by TASR, adding that it is absurd to jump to conclusions about SDKÚ's reluctance to support such an initiative based solely on the voting in the parliamentary committee.
According to Žitňanská, the discussed draft was drawn up in a hasty fashion and may turn out to be another of Fico’s pre-election moves that will later be overturned by the Constitutional Court, TASR reported.
