Slovakia's Constitutional Court is expected to decide on Wednesday, May 20, whether it will agree to a proposal lodged by a group of 46 MPs from the ruling coalition to have several provisions of the law establishing the Special Court and the Special Prosecutor Office declared ‘anti-constitutional’.
The court and prosecutor were established by the previous government to fight high-level corruption and organised crime, the SITA newswire wrote.
Leaked reports suggested that seven of the thirteen constitutional justices will not support the proposal. One of these is Judge Ladislav Orosz, who previously said he has faced attempts to intimidate him over the judgement. He said he received several threatening phone calls and that the health of his wife was threatened.
The MPs behind the proposal are mainly from the junior coalition party the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), led by former prime minister Vladimír Mečiar. SITA
