Construction companies will compensate bridge collapse victims’ families

The construction companies involved in the works at the collapsed bridge near the villages of Kurimany and Iliašovce, both in Prešov Region, will compensate the families of victims of the tragedy, which took place on November 2. The representatives of the Váhostav – SK and Bögl & Krýsl firms promised that every month until the end of the investigation they will pay an amount equal to the salaries of the four workers who died in the accident, the SITA newswire wrote.

“It is very important to help the families, especially in these hard times,” said Transport Minister Ján Počiatek, as quoted by SITA. “The deceased were oftentimes the breadwinners of the family, which do not know now what to do. Therefore one of my basic tasks after this tragedy will be to ensure that those affected most by the collapse of the supporting frame are not forgotten.”

Meanwhile a team of specialists attempted to blast off the part of the collapsed bridge. The explosion was not successful, however, though the upper part of the bridge was lifted up. A construction team then intervened to remove the parts of the bridge that were damaged by the blast with heavy construction equipment, the TASR newswire wrote.

SITA reported that Počiatek has also met with the representatives of the construction firms to discuss continuation of the work, which was halted because of the tragedy, which as well as the four deaths result in 12 injuries.
