Police arrested a high standing army colonel as she was taking a $500 (Sk16,700, €410) bribe.
The Slovak daily Pravda wrote on January 22 that Lieutenant Colonel Jarmila Sláviková, who works at the army’s centre of operations management, took the bribe from a professional soldier while promising to organise the prolongation of his stay in a peace mission in Eritrea.
The wages for soldiers in missions are very lucrative and can reach up to $2,100 (Sk68,500, €1,650), including special bonuses. While serving in foreign missions, soldiers also receive their regular wages at home.
Interior Minister Vladimír Palko said that Sláviková is suspected of taking bribes on several occasions. If found guilty, she could face up to five years in jail.
