Council of Europe warns Hungary

A COUNCIL of Europe legal committee has warned Hungary that if it does not by January 2003 make "fundamental changes" to a recent Status Law on Hungarians Living Abroad, it will face stern criticism in the European Parliament.

The Status Law, passed last year by Budapest, offers educational and cultural advantages to ethnic Hungarians living in neighbouring countries, and has stirred animosity particularly in Bratislava, which regards the measure as interference in Slovak sovereignty.
