THE BRATISLAVA II District Prosecutor's Office shelved a criminal case in the matter of the fictitious financial donors of the ruling Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) on April 13.
According to the SITA news agency, an accounting expert examined the SDKÚ's books for 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003, concluding that the party had accepted gifts of more than Sk9 million over the period. The expert also found that the party acted in line with accounting methods and did not conceal any payments.
A scandal over the SDKÚ's funding broke in 2004 when several people who were listed on the party's list of donors denied having made any donations to the SDKÚ.
Attorney General's Office spokesperson Svetlana Husárová said it was not possible to prove that these people had not really made any donations, especially as several had since "recovered" their memories.
"The party registered its donors and properly taxed the donations. Thus, the prosecutor decided to close the criminal case," Husárová said.
