Crystal Wing winner on OĽaNO EP slate

Ordinary People and Independent Personalities’ (OĽaNO) slate for the European Parliament elections (EP) is set to be topped by party MP Jozef Viskupič, with laureate of the Crystal Wing award for philanthropy Viera Dubačová and teacher Oto Žarnay coming next, the TASR newswire wrote on March 18. “We did just the same as when drawing up our list of candidates for the parliamentary election, that is to make sure in the first place that it has people with their own heart, their own senses and their own conscience,” said OĽaNO leader Igor Matovič, as quoted by the TASR newswire. The 13-strong list also includes incumbent OĽaNO MP Branislav Škripek, activist Mária Raučinová, head of the Association of Small Businesses Vladimír Sirotka, specialist in educating the Roma Stano Daniel, theatre director Jakub Nvota and European Federation of Parents and Carers at Home Vice President Stanislav Trnovec.

A puppeteer by vocation, Dubačová went on to set up a theatre troupe featuring mentally-challenged actors in 1995, among a number of other projects. Žarnay’s story made headlines last summer after he was sacked from a secondary school in Košice in what many viewed as revenge for his publicly denouncing wasteful spending at the school.

The slate of the non-parliamentary Party of Modern Slovakia (SMS) for the European Parliament (EP) elections includes several famous personalities; with ice hockey legend Jozef Golonka, 76, leading the way.

Next on the 13-strong slate comes Honorary Consul of South Africa Milan Lopašovský and former head of public service STV’s now defunct STV 3 sports channel Gabriel Kollár. Other well-known figures such as pianist Richard Rikkon and former national football team player Ľubomír Luhový are also among the selected candidates on the ticket. Urbáni also said that there’s a need to replace the current 13 MEPs with new faces, for the incumbents have failed to represent Slovakia well.
