THERE is a chance that the visa requirement for the US will be cancelled for Slovak citizens if Slovakia fulfils the existing requirements for the travel and free movement of its citizens within the US, the American Ambassador to Slovakia Rodolphe Vallee and Slovak Deputy Premier Pál Csáky agreed on Monday.

"However, this isn't a topic for the near future," Csáky added, pointing out that the biggest problem is the illegal migration of Slovaks to the US, the TASR news wire reported.

"Illegal migration will be viewed more strictly, particularly with thanks to the Homeland Security and police forces being joined up," he said.

Vallee informed Csáky about the American request to increase the emission quotas for US Steel Košice (the biggest American non-privatization deal in Slovakia). Slovakia was obliged to lower the Co2 emission quotas due to pressure from the European Union, while US Steel was critical of the measure.

"Given that it's a big investor, I guess it's possible to think the request over. Maybe as of 2007 or later," Csáky said.

Both officials also discussed political continuity in Slovakia after next year's parliamentary elections.

Csáky also informed Vallee about the position of minorities in Slovakia and human rights issues.
