THE CABINET is considering tougher sanctions for loan sharks in a bid to deter fraudsters, and help solve a problem that particularly affects the Roma communities, Deputy PM Pál Csáky said.
"Some people must be punished as a deterrent to others," said Csáky.
According to the state run news agency TASR Csáky wants to discuss options on how to curtail usury with Interior Minister Vladimír Palko and police force leaders.
Justice Minister Daniel Lipšic said the problem could be dealt with in the
re-codification of the country's Criminal Code in October.
Palko said that the police have recently been more successful in solving loan shark problems - in 2001 there were only 17 cases, whereas this year there have already been 94 convictions.
