MORE than 50 personalities from Slovakia's cultural community have called on the government to fire Culture Minister František Tóth.

In their appeal, the group wrote that the minister had failed to handle "the operation of cultural institutions and culture in general," the daily SME reported They also claimed that culture should not be a "guinea pig in the hands of an agile politician."

Tóth, who was originally a close ally of New Citizen's Alliance (ANO) boss Pavol Rusko, is now a member of a group led by Ľubomír Lintner, which left ANO in protest against suspicions of corruption surrounding their former boss.

Artists, actors and cultural activists claim that the culture department under Tóth's leadership is "leaning towards a vulgar understanding of economic liberalism".

The Culture Ministry responded that the minister would not react to the appeal since it did not contain any concrete objections.

The opposition has been trying to have Tóth fired for some time, and several opposition members expressed agreement with the letter.
