PRIME MINISTER Mikuláš Dzurinda and František Alexander, chairman of the Union of Jewish Religious Communities (ÚZŽNO) signed an agreement that will compensate the country's Holocaust victims.
Under the terms of the deal, signed on October 9, the Slovak cabinet will deposit Sk850 million ($19 million) in the National Bank of Slovakia. Annual revenues of between Sk60 million and Sk65 million ($1.36 million and $1.5 million) from this account will be distributed among Holocaust victims and their families.
"This agreement is an expression of how we feel about the victims of the Holocaust," Dzurinda said after signing the agreement.
Until 2012, when the amount remaining in the account will be transferred to ÚZŽNO, money from the account will also be used to support social, educational and cultural programmes for the country's 5,000-strong Jewish community.
