The student at the centre of a recent controversy over unearned degrees at Trenčín University is reported to have obtained a second degree – this one from the Technological University in Košice – by fraudulent means.
Daniela Bánociová degree from the Engineering Faculty of the Technological University in Košice was awarded after a normal period of study, unlike the “express degree” she received from the Faculty of Mechatronics at Alexander Dubček University in Trenčín that took her only nine months to complete. However, both degrees were awarded on the strength of a single paper, entitled – somewhat ironically, given the circumstances – ‘Innovative Methods in the Education System’.
The Pravda daily reported that this contained paragraphs from the work of another Trenčín student, Darina Havierová, who graduated at around the same time as Bánociová, and whose work was supervised by Daniel Bánoci, who is dean of the Faculty of Socio-Economic Relations at Trenčín Unviersity and Daniela Bánociová’s father. Another part of Bánociová’s work was copied from the internet, the Pravda daily reported on its website on November 25.
Slovak law does not allow the same graduate work to be submitted to more than one university. The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the Technological University in Košice confirmed to the media the double submission of the work.
