Unions and transport companies have expressed differing opinions about whether a bus drivers’ strike in Žilina on Wednesday, February 9, was successful or not. According to the OZ KOVO union, which wanted to demonstrate its opposition to proposed amendments to the Labour Code, the management and operators of the city transport company threatened drivers who said they would join the strike.
OZ KOVO informed the SITA newswire that 90 percent of drivers on city transport and approximately half of those on commuter lines who were supposed to leave Žilina bus station between 14:30 and 15:00 joined the strike.
However, according to city transport company head Jan Barienčík, nine out of 30 bus drivers joined the strike, together with eight out of approximately 30 trolleybus drivers. In effect, though, all trolleybus lines were brought to a halt since a single halted trolleybus can block all others travelling in the same direction.
