REPRESENTATIVES of people with disabilities on December 6 protested at SNP Square in Bratislava against worsening conditions for disabled people in Slovakia, the SITA news agency reported.
They demanded that the government adopt laws on social insurance and social assistance that would promptly solve their financial problems. About 50 people took part in the protest, despite heavy rain.
The protesters want those who care for the disabled to be relieved of the duty to pay social and health insurance.
Furthermore, they ask the government to increase their income to above three-fold the subsistence level.
They also want the cabinet's council for disabled citizens to be transformed into a real advisory body for the Slovak government and chaired by a deputy prime minister.
On the European Day of Disabled People, December 3, the president of the Association of Organizations of Disabled Citizens in Slovakia, Maria Orgonásová, said that the disabled person's status in society has improved over the last few years.
She said that perhaps many people do not realize how barriers are gradually being removed in their surroundings.
