District state offices on firing line

The ruling coalition has agreed that district state offices will be abolished as of January 1, 2004 and their powers transferred to locally elected governments. The step is expected to bring to an end to the decentralisation of state power in Slovakia, a process connected to Slovakia’s EU accession that was launched in 2001.
