SLOVAK police are hoping a new electronic database of DNA samples will help them in their fight against crime. The Slovak DNA lab is equipped with a CODIS computer system, originally developed for the FBI, according to the SME daily.
Interior Minister Vladimír Palko said that countries using a similar database have increased their clear-up rate of violent crimes by 30 percent.
Until now, Slovak police have searched for suspects according to blood group. DNA profiling enables police to identify suspects with much greater accuracy, as much as 99.9 percent.
The adoption of the new system has cost Sk14 million (€362,700) to date. The Interior Ministry would like to gain a further Sk60 million (€1.6 million) from the EU to fund the system.
