One of the largest protests in the history of the Slovak health-care sector, which started in hospitals all over Slovakia and is being led by trade unions, has now resulted in the announced resignations of 200 hospital doctors in Banská Bystrica, over 150 in Prešov, and further warning signals from Košice and Žilina, the Hospodárske Noviny and Sme dailies wrote. The doctors' departure would seriously threaten the operation of the hospitals in question.
The head of the Medical Trade Union (LOZ), Marián Kollár, expects 2,000 doctors to deliver notices of resignation. He said that they would continue working normally during their two-month notice periods. But the union boss warned that if they did not reach an agreement with Health Minister Ivan Uhliarik during that time then "problems would occur". He said he believes that other forms of protests do not work.
