Over the course of the day on September 29, the head of the Doctors’ Unions Association (LOZ) said that 2,411 doctors from 34 Slovak hospitals will submit notices to their employers terminating their employment contracts that are dated October 1, the TASR newswire reported.
“This is somewhere around 50 percent of the total number of hospital doctors who treat patients, and in some branches, this is even 75 percent,” stated Marian Kollár, the head of the union, at a press conference in Bratislava on Thursday.
The union head added that in Bratislava alone more than 600 doctors will file notices terminating their employment contracts, about one-half of the total number of hospital doctors in the city.
Medical personnel decided to take this step as four demands they submitted to the government have not been met. These include respect by hospitals for the requirements of the Labour Code, more state funding for the health-care sector, better salaries, and a halt to the transformation of state hospitals into joint-stock companies.
