ALMOST €2 million has already been raised in Slovakia to help and support Haiti, which was hit by a damaging earthquake on January 12.
There have been eleven fundraising initiatives so far, which have managed to gather €1,967,000. One fifth of the money collected has already been sent to Haiti, the SITA newswire reported.
Fundraising efforts were initiated by the Evangelic Church of Augsburg Confession, UNICEF Slovakia, the Slovak Red Cross, the Man in Peril non-governmental organisation, ADRA Slovakia, Magna Children in Need, Slovak Scouting and the Complex Central Rescue Service.
The biggest chunk of the overall amount, over €1 million, was collected by the Bishops Conference of Slovakia through collections in Catholic churches all over the country. Money raised in this way has been assigned to concrete projects organised by the Slovak Catholic Charity, which, on top of that, has also organised its own fundraising.
