Former general prosecutor Dobroslav Trnka, whose term in office expired on February 2, will be able to run for re-election, the SITA newswire reported, based on a draft amendment to the law on the prosecutor’s office that Prime Minister Iveta Radičová and Justice Minister Lucia Žitňanská presented at a news conference on February 7.
The new wording of the proposed law will not apply to any person appointed to the post of general prosecutor before May 1, 2011 and was included in the draft so that the proposed revision is not retroactive or discriminatory, SITA wrote.
Under the proposed amendment, a person may not become prosecutor general more than once. The draft amendment to the law, submitted for interdepartmental review on February 4 is designed to make the work of prosecutors more transparent.
