Boris Záhumenský who, with his arrogant driving blocked an ambulance on the way to Trenčín, may be punished with up to one-year imprisonment. The police charged him with general endangerment for an incident that occurred nearly a year ago, the Sme daily reported.
The incident is captured on a video that runs for less than three minutes. The experts found at least 22 situations where he endangered himself and also his environment. There were several people in other cars that might have been harmed.
“This means that he caused general danger with his negligence,” said spokesperson for the regional police corps department in Trenčín Elena Antalová, as quoted by Sme.
The video was taken by the crew of the emergency medical service, which was transporting a patient in serious condition to the Trenčín hospital. Záhumenský, a businessman, civic activist and member of the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), passed the ambulance in front of a roundabout in Trenčianska Turná which stayed behind the vehicle for several kilometres. His car was going through full lines and turning lanes, blocking the ambulance and preventing it from overtaking his car.
Záhumenský submitted a complaint against the charges, but they were dismissed by the Trenčín regional prosecutor’s office, Sme wrote.
He refused to comment on the accusation. Following the incident, he asked for his KDH membership to be suspended so as not to connect it with the party after the case is over, Sme reported.
Záhumenský complains that the case has already ruined his business as his driving licence has been taken away. The businessman also claimed that he wanted to help the ambulance with his driving and tried to clear the way for it.
The police based the charges on expert opinions, so the investigation was prolonged to several months. The first opinion was deemed insufficient and the investigators asked for a new one at the beginning of the year, Sme wrote.
