Drunk drivers face stricter penalties

PENALTIES for drivers who cause traffic accidents while driving drunk will increase in August, Slovak Minister of Justice Daniel Lipšic told the news wire SITA.

The maximum penalty for an intoxicated driver who causes one fatality will increase from five to 10 years, while the penalty for accidents resulting in the deaths of two or more people will increase to 12 years.

These changes relate to the European arrest warrant law that parliament approved on June 24.

For the first five months of this year, 24,586 traffic accidents were reported on Slovak roads. Of these, drunk drivers caused 1,034.
