Two people have died in another accident caused by a drunk-driving Slovak policeman. Michal Šamaj, 22, a border guard with the Brodsky division in western Slovakia, skidded off the road in Malacký town at 01:30 on May 20, hitting a pole and killing his two passengers, one of whom was his father. Police estimate the car was travelling 190 kilometres per hour in the small town.
While Šamaj at first refused a breath test, on being taken to hospital his blood was found to contain 1.72 parts per thousand alcohol. He has been charged with causing bodily harm while under the influence, and faces six months to five years in jail if convicted.
The accident is the tenth this year involving drunk-driving police, and brings the victim toll to six dead and four injured.
