THE NON-PARLIAMENTARY Democratic Party (DS) approved a merger with the ruling Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), the Pravda daily wrote.
The delegates of the DS decided on the merger by a margin of just one vote on December 17 at a party congress. The party’s chairman, former Labour Minister Ľudovít Kaník, supports the merger.
A group led by DS deputy chairman Branislav Hochel voted against the merger. The opponents are not sure yet, what their next steps will be. “Maybe we will decide to join the SDKÚ, there are many possibilities,” said Hochel.
According to Kaník, however, the merger is a significant step that means the continuation of the party’s policies within a stronger political party.
The two parties should officially merge at a January congress of the SDKÚ. The new political grouping will be called the SDKÚ-DS.
