THE CAUCUS of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) party will continue as former two-time prime minister Mikuláš Dzurinda and his right-hand man Ivan Mikloš decided to stay. Their departure would have led to the caucus’ dissolution, since it must have at least six members.
“We made an agreement: the SDKÚ caucus will continue with its original composition,” SDKÚ deputy chairman Ivan Štefanec told the press, as quoted by the TASR newswire. “It is important to seek cooperation in every situation and in every sphere.”
Dzurinda and Mikloš declared they were leaving the party on June 4 due to what they called the failure of the new leadership to rejuvenate what was once the country’s strongest right-wing party. They also cited dissatisfaction with the course the party has taken since 2012, when Pavol Frešo took over from Dzurinda.
“We no longer want to carry responsibility for this development,” said Mikloš, as quoted by the SITA newswire.
