Dzurinda government hits new popularity low

A recent political poll carried out by the state-funded Statistical Office has given ruling coalition parties one of their lowest support ratings since 1998 elections - 30.8%, compared to 40.3% for the current opposition and 24.7% for the two largest non-parliamentary parties.

One coalition party, the former communist SDĽ, fell to its historic low of 3% from its 1998 result of over 14%. Some SDĽ figures have called for a planned November 17 SDĽ national assembly to be moved forward; several prominent SDĽ members, including Agriculture Minister Pavol Koncoš, have announced they will run for the party leadership to replace current chairman Jozef Migaš.
