Former two-time Slovak premier Mikuláš Dzurinda was released from Košice’s University (Louis Pasteur) Hospital on the morning of January 7 ollowing an injury to his head on Monday night that, by his own admission, took place after he drank too much.
The accident happened at a party marking the 80th birthday of former President Rudolf Schuster in a hotel in the centre of Košice. Dzurinda admitted that he drank spirits at the party, then slipped outside the hotel and fell, injuring his head. Dzurinda was kept in hospital overnight for observation. The injury wasn't of a serious nature, he said, noting that a few stitches were required.
Elaborating on the circumstances leading up to the accident, Dzurinda said that he'd gone on a 15-kilometre run around ’Železná Studienka’, part of Bratislava's forest park, that morning. He added that he then drove to Košice, which resulted in a mild sensation of fatigue. “Apparently, I missed the moment when I should have stopped having another drink,” Dzurinda said. He said that he fell to the ground when attempting to light a cigarette, something he indulges in only occasionally.
Dzurinda served as Slovak prime minister for two successive terms - 1998-2002 and 2002-2006. He was also Slovakia's foreign affairs minister between 2010 and 2012.
