PM Mikuláš Dzurinda will likely not face a challenger in the upcoming elections for the post of chairman of his Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) party, the Pravda daily wrote.

The SDKÚ's executive board has set the leadership ballot for February 18.

Although Dzurinda is expected to breeze to another term, the SDKÚ chairman says he is not worried at the prospect of competition.

"I had no problem with it four years ago either," said Dzurinda.

In 2002 Dzurinda was challenged by Ivan Šimko, the SDKÚ's former nominee as Defense Minister. Šimko lost the vote to Dzurinda and, after being fired from his Defense Ministry post in a rancorous dispute over a national security official, left the SDKU for good to set up the Free Forum party.
