The European Commission is planning to unify road toll payments for all EU countries with a single toll-payment device, which would be valid for all countries involved, as well as a single invoice. Member states have already taken steps to implement the plan, the Sme daily wrote in its Thursday, July 25 issue.
However, Slovakia has received a letter from the EU warning that it is behind schedule. The local toll system operator Skytoll could potentially get the order for servicing the system in Slovakia, as it already owns a satellite system. “The Commission already asked Slovakia for an explanation of the delay – and if we do not receive a satisfactory answer, we might launch an official proceeding against the country,” Paolo Berrino of the press department of European Commissioner for Transport Siim Kallas said, according to Sme.
Transport Ministry spokesperson Martin Kóňa reacted by saying that Slovakia is currently preparing a new law on road tolls and that the unitary toll roaming system has been delayed throughout the whole EU.
