Slovakia is doing a poor job of managing its rubbish, according to a European Commission ranking of member states that identified major shortcomings in the implementation of an efficient approach towards waste, the TASR newswire reported.
“Failings include poor or non-existent waste prevention policies, a lack of incentives to divert waste from landfills, and inadequate waste infrastructure,” stated a press release from the EC, as quoted by TASR. “Heavy reliance on land filling means that better waste management options such as re-use and recycling are consistently underexploited. The outlook is accordingly poor.”
The EC assessed all 27 member states using 18 criteria in areas such a total waste recycled, infringements of European legislation and pricing of waste disposal. As well as Slovakia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Poland and Romania also scored poorly.
By contrast, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden achieved the best results, TASR wrote.
