The European Commission initiated an action against Slovakia on May 14 in connection with the tender for the electronic highway-toll collection system organised by the state-owned National Highway Company (NDS), according to the TASR newswire.
The EC said that NDS may have violated EU regulations pertaining to tenders, especially those outlining fair treatment and non-discrimination, when it excluded three of the tender applicants, TASR wrote.
The first stage of the proceedings against Slovakia takes the form of a letter of formal notice asking for an explanation. The Slovak authorities then have two months to respond to it. If the EC isn't satisfied with the explanation, a second stage of legal action will follow. In the third and the final stage the country would be taken to the European Court of Justice. TASR
