The government says it plans to amend the law on business relations after complaints from suppliers concerning the practices of retail chains. The law has been in effect only since the beginning of 2009.
The government said it intends to change the law using shortened legislative proceedings.
An imbalance in business relations has almost ruined some suppliers, the Economy Ministry, which proposed the law, argues. By amending it, it wants to stop chains from bypassing its provisions. It said that retail chains have tried to avoid observing the law by obtaining statements from suppliers saying that they were not ‘economically dependent’ on their customers – i.e. retail chains – and that they had not accepted inappropriate business conditions. Suppliers, threatened with loss of business, were allegedly forced to agree to the chains’ conditions, thus giving up their legal protection.
