Education Minister Martin Fronc on February 11 presented the exact figures for the state financing of elementary and secondary schools, as determined by the changes approved to the system several months ago.
The new funding is based on the concept of pupil normative, which is a sum that the state pays to schools based on their number of students rather than their number of classes, as was the practice until last year.
Under the new system, schools will receive between Sk20,900 (€510) and 36,600 (€895) per pupil, the Slovak daily Pravda wrote on February 12. The funding varies depending on the type of school as well as the institution's geographical position; it is expected that schools based in colder regions of the country, for example, will need more money to pay for heating and energy.
For every pupil, schools will receive an additional Sk750 (€18) that can be used for construction works.
Several schools may be shut down as a result of the new system and some may have to be merged according to expectations.
