Peter Plavčan was born on June 20, 1960. He graduated from the University of Economics in Bratislava and later he graduated with specialisation in education also at the Comenius University in Bratislava and at the Constantin Philosopher University in Nitra, the SITA newswire reported.
Plavčan started his career at the state-run Institute for Information and Prognoses in Bratislava as a researcher.
Plavčan has been linked with the two student loan funds since they were launched in 1997, TIS wrote, through his membership in the boards and their supervisory councils, Plavčan has reportedly received over €38,000 for holding those posts which were supposed to be honorary and unpaid. After the media reported on that, he returned the money but remained with the ministry.
In 2014 Plavčan faced allegations of conflict of interest: his daughter worked as an assistant to the representative of the private university Danubius in Sladkovicovo, while Plavčan served as a host member of the scientific council of the school, Sme wrote.
Head of SNS Andrej Danko who nominated Plavčan for the post said he did not consider those allegations as any scandals, and that Plavčan was selected from among a number of candidates based on his professional experience and ambition.
